A Scrappy start!

I find that I am really uneasy and restless without a scrappy project to piece in my spare moments.  I looked through my already cut out pieces, and discovered enough pieces to make this quilt.  Tonight, I started piecing!!  The blocks are 6 inch finished, and that makes each flying goose block 2 x 4 inches.

My wish is to sew up every single scrap of fabric I have.  A lofty goal, to be sure...I better get sewing!!

I have been thinking of the fate of the quilts I have so enjoyed making and loved...I guess it is really about the quilting journey, for me. The finished quilts are humble, and really made to keep people warm in body and spirit.  None are great masterpieces, yet I love them as if they were.  I want these quilts to go to people who need a warm boost and quilty hug.  Do  you know what I mean?  I prefer that they are not sold in an estate or yard sale someday, but rather, go to people who can use them, now. Any thoughts?

Hugs to all!!  I am so glad my Florida friends are safe and unharmed...please keep posting, if you are able!!

Planet fitness sent out an email blast in my area about collecting blankets for Alison's heart, a charitable organization.
P.s. I love your basket weave quilt and I have shades of purple that I'm inspired to work up similarly. Thank you!

Such a lovely thought Julie

Once you make and give away a quilt their fate is in other's hands. You just hope their intended use is continued. Now about using up every single scrap....what are you considering a scrap? :0)

You described why I make and donate quilts to Quilts of Valor! I enjoy the process; the vets can enjoy the quilts.

Back when I used to hand quilt, I'd tell the person that was receiving the quilt, how many hours I spent hand quilting it. When they knew that I'd spent 100 hours or more, just on the quilting, not piecing, etc, they appreciated the quilt so much more. For non-stitchers, they just needed to know a bit of what went into that quilt. Those quilts are all appreciated. I know my sons know what goes into quilt making, and appreciate all my quilts. As for quilts that I donate, I'll (hopefully) never know how those quilts are treated. I did find one of the quilts that my little quilt guild made, and gave to veterans for hospital patients, only a few months after it was made, at a thrift store (I'm hoping that the vet died, and they didn't know what to do with the quilt). I bought it, washed it, and it was re-donated. I know who made it, and I've never told her, since she would be so hurt. I collect quilts that others have made, and I've found in thrift stores, garage sales, etc. At least those quilts now have a home where they are appreciated and cared for.

I have bought quilts at estate sales that I have loved and used to pieces! But I have the same concerns about leaving quilts. I make them because I love to cut and sew and color. Not an artist so this is my way to use color. I wish people knew how much a quilt made today cost. Sometimes I am tempted to tell them.

I love the "making" of a quilt and I am rarely attached to the quilt once it is finished. They are easy for me to send off on their way. When I do gift a quilt, I always tell people that I want to outlive the quilt so they had better get to using it!

I know what you mean! We have a huge family between my husband and I so there's always people to gift them to. Also, we have so many friends in our church, I love gifting them to people who are having a hard time {illness, grief, family troubles etc.}--it is really touching sometimes how well loved a quilt is in those situations! Still, there's plenty left here in our home to use. Thus far I've never donated to charities as I've never ran out of people I want to pass a quilt on to.:)

It is good therapy to express yourself with fabric, using design and color as an outlet.
You are far too modest, Julie. I see masterpieces coming together in every post.

There must be a small organization in your area that you could adopt. Here we have a home for battered women and children, and a home for intellectually challenged young adults opening up soon. You do know that scraps are an invasive species, right? They multiply while we sleep! I always love your scrappy creations, and this one will be no exception! Flying geese are so versatile and no matter how they are arranged, very pleasing to the eyes.

Our church has a SS class of adult handicapped people; some cannot talk; some cannot walk; and there's everything in between! They so need love and affection, but thank the Lord, they have a wonderful teacher who picks them up every Sunday in a church van, and does all she can to teach them about God's love for them. Two years ago I decided to make each of them a Christmas pillowcase. Last year I made them a little pillow. I've been wondering what I could do for them this year. After reading your blog tonight, I think I know. I guess I better get busy cutting scraps and making 4-patches so I can get a throw made for each of them! They need all the love they can get! And Christmas is on the way! Thanks for helping me decide. Maybe there's a similar class in your church you could help with your scraps. ---"Love"

Puffins and purples!!

I was tempted by Puffins...a squirrelly breed!!  LOL!  This fabric was shared with me, and I have been loved these bright, candy corn colors...
