Green!!

Years ago, I made this green quilt top, from a magazine pattern, I think.
 Feathered star...
Itty bitty applique and one inch triangles; quarter inch wide borders...

I have yet to quilt it, and always thought I would have it machine quilted, but maybe I will try to hand quilt it.  It takes me a good forever, though...

Just musing here, but I am finding, looking back, that I was really after the most demanding and challenging patterns I could find, back then.  I relished it!  When I look at my work now, it is pretty dumbed down, in my opinion.  What happened?

Am I just older...or did the scraps take over?  When did I get on the track of more is better??  I find great joy in what I do, don't get me wrong...

Any thoughts?
I made more blocks for the Meeting House sampler quilt...loving these!!

Maybe at the time you were wanting to prove to yourself that you could do those hard things, so you chose them repeatedly.
Now you KNOW you can do the hard things--you don't have anything to prove, so you can just enjoy. And isn't that what it is all about?
It is a beautiful feathered star, but I'll admit, it doesn't look like "you." :)

That is a beautiful quilt! I hope whether you hand or machine quilt it, you get it done! That quilt is too beautiful not to be finished! Maybe it is because you want to enjoy quilting and not stress! I know I stress over difficult designs needlessly!

Sometimes we have to do the most challenging, so that we can develop the skills in order to find our voice. All your quilts are beautiful and your voice sings!

You were like so many "modern" quilters today -- you did things you didn't know you weren't supposed to be able to do! When I look at my "early work" I see that I was more creative then; now I'm just trying to use up the stash.

i didn't see how difficult some quilts were until I had some experience. And the, some I discovered I didn't like at all, and I don't have to do them anymore. I still do some challenging things, but they are the ones I like doing.

For me, it's the challenge. Youngsters want to climb the echelon of the corporation. At one point, there's no need to show we are bullet proof and can take on any challenge because we have made our mark. Now that your skills are acquired, you need to design your own quilts and not follow patterns. I did it the other way around. (I really had a problem with following crowds, hehehe.) This green quilt is awesome, but the green one you showed in your last post is Julie's awesomeness. ;^)

The feathered star quilt is a real beauty! Now that you know you can do the more difficult quilts, you are following your heart and doing the ones you love. No dumbing down there at all!
Have a great weekend!

I agree with all of the above and I would add that I like to go back and forth. Complex is nice but time consuming and slow to progress. I do a bit of that and then I do something improv or simple to balance the complex out. Plus I like to give quilts away. If all I made were complicated pattern my productivity would be way lower...less to gift away. People other than quilters don't necessarily see the "time" spent on one quilt or another just giving them a quilt that warms, comforts and delights the eye is enough and does not need to take that much time. cheers!

I think you are not seeing the smarts you are using in your design skills. Case in point...the bright applique that you used stings for the sashings. I see your talents still clearly shining. And using up scraps too! Keep doing what you love. It's working! :-)

You are not alone on this matter--I find I enjoy the simpler patterns today--(think it is age related a bit too)
still love the old fashioned styles for blocks the most--just can't get my head around the new 'modern' looking quilts--
luv, di
ps--love that quilt though--great job--

I love all your quilts, your talent shows even in the simplest design. However I do feel that--at least in quilt blog world--there's a lot off pressure to make a lot, get it done, which leads to choosing simple fast patterns. I'd rather spend years enjoying the process and try hard not to be influences by the high production folks, much as admire them.

I also think [and know I m in the minority] that current;y there is too much emphasis on using scraps. We all have too much yardage stashed away! Let's use it a buy more, support the textile trade. Life's too short to fool around with postage stamp bits and pieces.

Your Feathered Star is awesome, and I'm sure it was difficult, but it looks perfect to me. Every year I tell myself not to choose a difficult pattern, nor to start a really large quilt, but sometimes I can't resist. No matter what you choose, I'm positive you will have a finish that personifies perfection, whether it be difficult or not. You always do! I agree with Donna above: Get it Done! Just enjoy the ride! ---"Love"

I do demanding on occasion, but most of the time I prefer simple, so that I can get things done instead of stressing.

Beautiful quilt! Life got in the way for a few years and my work slowed down and quilts were not the most difficult but challenging. Back on track now and will be working on complex and non-complex quilts. Trying to work on the bucket list! I wonder what happened to all the energy level........Humm maybe it is age! LOL. Great post!

That's a beautiful feathered star. Follow your heart and make the quilts that you love, simple or challenging. It doesn't matter.

Your green quilt is oh so good. Feathered star blocks are not the easiest to accomplish.

I was tempted by Puffins...a squirrelly breed!!  LOL!  This fabric was shared with me, and I have been loved these bright, candy corn colors...
