My sister just got married, and she is cleaning out her home, preparing to move in with her new husband. She was married 48 years to a dear man, who got Alzheimer's and passed away. Four years later and totally unexpectedly (to her and all of us), she got remarried this past Friday! Hurrah for happy endings and new beginnings, no matter how old you are!!
This quilt top was in her house, and she does not know where it came from. It is totally hand pieced, even those long sashing strips. I love it...very worn and parts are missing, but it is so charming!
I made a little heart quilt...lots of these have been made and given away. I love hearts!!
My mother had ALS, and before she passed away, she was starting another quilt. This is the last quilt she worked on before her death. My sis gave this to me too.
I love the old fabrics, and the pieces of cloth that made up dresses and aprons that I recognize from my childhood and my sister's as well. Thank you, Mom, for a glorious legacy..I love you so much, and I know you are having fun up in Heaven!!!
Have a great day, all!!

Lovely post Julie............sadness and then comes happiness.......we are a robust lot! Quilt love herexxx
Some lovely memories for you, with your mums unfinished quilt. The butterfly quilt is gorgeous, I really would live to make one, the old fashioned fabrics just really look fab. And the heart quilt is just lovely!
Lots of treasures! Congrats to your sister!
How lovely that your sister gets a second chance at love. So nice of her to give you the two quilts, especially the one your Mum started, very special to have....and perhaps to finish!
Congrats to your sis! Love the quilts that she gave you - and what a nice trip down memory lane!
The butterfly top is lovely! I wonder if it could have been made by a family member. Is that what you suspect? The LG blocks are very special.
How lovely to have that quilt your mother started, especially since your have memories of the fabrics she used.
Lovely quilts and lovely stories.
It is so nice that your sister gave you the quilt. It is beautiful. Happy for her as well. I love the stories that are know about things we are given. Happy day.
Congratulations to your sister & her new husband.
Love the vintage quilts - the sashing on the butterfly top is wonderful with the "x" at the intersections. I'm thrilled that your sister gave you the blocks that your Mom made. Any plans to make a runner with them or will you leave them as they are?
Such sweet quilts! The butterflies are lovely. Congratulations to your sister and best wishes for more years of love :-)
As quilters we know quilts are so much more than a "blanket"!! Congrats to your sis!!
Yes....I too enjoyed your post. Such wonderful treasures rejuvinated!! So happy for your sis too.
Love seems to be shining through your world right now. Hope you get a chance to embrace it!! I am cleaning out my Mom's sewing room right now. I have found some started pieces & can remember being with her when she started a couple. We took a few classes together!! The healing process is getting better & a little easier. Good Luck to your sister on a great new beginning. Love to see what you do with your blocks.
What wonderful happiness for your sister. Being the beneficiary of that sweet old quilt is a nice side benefit for you in her change of circumstance. : )
I love that you have that piece from your Mom now, full of all kinds of good memories. I know you will treasure it. Do you have plans to add to it, or make it a table runner?
DH's aunt had an old quilt top her mother had never finished and I believe she separated the blocks and had them framed individually and gave a couple to each of her sisters. I love the look of them hanging on her wall above her Mom's old machine.
I'm sure your Mom will be smiling down on you, whatever you choose to do with it.
Dear Julie,
what a great story, quilts and started quilts do make up great memories.
Greetings,
Sylvia
What special quilts for you to receive, lots of memories as a bonus. Enjoy!
Special quilts. My father had Alzheimers. My mother re-married a few years after he died. I'm so glad she is happy now. Congrats to your sister and her new hubby.
I love those blocks! What will you do with the quilt? Will you finish it or make it into a wall hanging or table runner or something?
