An old quilt!!

Doesn't this look an lot like the Granny Blocks that lots of bloggers are doing right now??
My sister and I found this old quilt in an antique store in Weatherford, Texas.  The pictures cannot possible do it justice, but it is the most beautiful, soft, and loved quilt!  All 1930's fabrics, hand pieced and hand quilted.  $55.00.
Is it foolish for me to buy old quilts like this one?  I hate to see it just draped over some old furniture, or used as a tarp or something.  I think of that quilter of old, sewing patiently by hand every stitch..and I honor her.  Do you have an opinion about old quilts?  Do you buy them???  I can't afford the really expensive ones, but this one, I could swing!
A new project!!  This is a local designer, and I love her patterns!!  This is a raggedy edged quilt...fun and easy!
I have all the pieces cut out, as you can see...just need to set them wonky and sew them together, them cut the edges to rags!!  Then wash it, and the magic will happen...at least I am hoping that, LOL!!!

Have a great day, all!!!

Julie

I don't think it is silly to buy old quilts. There is something lovely about them, they have a story.
Nice new project!

I LOVE your new/old quilt purchase! What a great deal! I would collect antique quilts if I had a place to display them, but I am overrun with quilts and fabric here! *grin*

Your old quilt is stunning. What an honour it is (for whoever made it) to have someone like yourself treasure and appreciate all the time and effort that went into making that quilt :) I would love to come across such a great find.....maybe one day :)

I, too, would have purchased that quilt. I can't afford much either, but I want to honor the work of these women who made such lovely quilts without the benefit of the fabric selections and handy tools we now enjoy. At that price, I couldn't have passed it up.
Looks like you are up to another wonderful plaid concoction! : )

I would have "rescued" that old quilt too! I spotted a red & white quilt at a community yard sale marked at $15 and I snatched it up. I had it appraised later - turns out it was early 1900s hand-pieced quilt with wool batting worth SUBSTANTIALLY more than $15. Since the yard sale was for the benefit of the community center (a non-profit) I sent them a generous donation with the suggestion that they have someone who knows something about quilts help them price quilts in the future!

I'm like you...rescue the quilt if the price is right!! Your quilt is gorgeous!! Now you don't have to make a Granny Sq. Quilt!! I really like the rag quilt that you are making...so different and you know how I feel about Homespuns!! LOVE them!

Definitely not silly to rescue something as wonderful as this!!! What an enormous amount of work has gone into this quilt, and yes I agree the maker should be honoured! I bet she would have a fit if she knew her amazing quilt made it on to the world wide web!!! She'd be tickled.....!!!!

I've been thinking about doing a Granny Square quilt and after seeing this quilt will really consider using a pale yellow instead of white. Love it!!

I love finding out quilts and quilt tops, so many people anymore don't think about the work done to create these works of art. Rescuing them is a good thing.

If it is foolish, I, too, am that fool. It is beautiful and well worth the expense. How large are the finished squares? I REALLY must get around to making myself one of these.

I love old quilts too! If I can afford one I would buy it too, I found a wedding ring quilt once at the "pound store" where all textiles were 65 cents a pound, which made it like $3!

I'm so glad you gave that beautiful quilt a good home! I'm the same way.....I can't afford the really expensive ones, but when I see something that is full of love, and I can afford to, I get it! I usually use them in decorating, not on bed to be used. I have several hanging in bedrooms, and they instantly warm the room with love!

What a beautiful old quilt! I wonder what they called that pattern back then? Love the new quilt you're going to make! :0)

The old quilt is lovely. Yes, it does look like the Granny Block that is all the rage now, which reinforces my thought that patterns are NOT as new as designers want us to believe. Just sayin' ;oD

Oh my! My heart skipped a beat when I saw this beautiful quilt! I love, love, love old quilts. I am happy you are giving it a good home where it is loved as I am sure the quilter intended. I hand piece and hand quilt and it is a slow process but so worth it in the end and I truly hope the quilts I make are cherished long after I am gone.

I have a few, they are not top of the line, but still made with love. Plus we can't make every pattern we love, so buying a few is certainly OK!

I would have bought it too- I don't often see antique quilts around here or I am not looking in the right place. I should check out the antique shops and thrift shops more often. This one is a beauty- It bothers me to see an old quilt poorly treated- someone put a lot of effort trying to create something beautiful.
Thanks for sharing your lovely old quilt.
Regards from Western Canada,
Anna

I don't visit antique shops often - too tempting and I'm usually trying to downsize, but that quilt deserves to be saved! You are right - it IS a beauty!!! I would buy it. 8-))

I feel the same way about afghans, doilies etc. . .So many times I see a doily for 50 cents, and it breaks my heart for the person who put so much time in. Usually at estate sales. Quilts I can't afford to rescue. Lol

No, not foolish for you to buy that lovely well used quilt. it's worth it!

I recently rescued two wonderful quilts from being used as 'utility blankets'. I think it is important to conserve whatever quilts and quilt fragments we can. Even small samples somtimes lead to interesting results either as inspireing new peojects or in research. You never know. You can see my rescued quilts at my other blog= clairewitherspoon.wordpress.com. Under the title of "A funny thing happen on the way to the Fumigators..." It turned out that one of the quilts was even signed and dated! cheers, Claire W.

Great new/old treasure! The yellow looks so cheery and great. Fun to dream about who made it and the story that goes with old quilts.

I would have bought that old quilt in a heartbeat. I rarely see any around here that are that good a price or if they are they are in very poor condition. So glad you saved it.
