Crumb quilts

It is fun to make something, out of practically nothing.  All these little pieces were salvaged from impending garbage!  This is an older quilt I made, and alas, I did not put a label on it.  I do have a record of it the blog, so I will find that date and put a label on it!!
Blanket stitch applique...great fun!
This is my latest quilt, made from crumbs
The above quilt has a label!!  Hahaha...it is also a crumb quilt, but in a more formal setting.
I just love those little scraps!  do you????

I have been meal prepping.  The cafeteria at work is a sea of processed, overly salted and yucky fat food. I am just going to not go there, and take my own meals, instead.  A bit of chicken and some vegies will be just fine, thank you!  The veggies look kind of sad, but they taste good.

**********************Talk with the cardiologist*******************

There is a very slim and trim cardiologist (66 years old) at work, who just happens to be my husband's doctor.  I had a moment to speak to him about what he eats. He shared that he was quite overweight in medical school, and said that he just would never do that again!   He has oatmeal for breakfast, lean chicken and vegies for lunch from home, and then a lean protein, vegies, and fruit for dessert at dinner.   I shared with him that I would like to lose a bit of weight, and he fixed me with those eyes and said, "Well, what are you doing about it?  What are you waiting for?" Well that kind of opened my eyes a bit!

He is so right.  It is a personal responsibility, mine alone!   He said it is better to set a small goal, like to lose 5 pounds, than to try and lose 15 all at once.  Make the goal measurable and time limited.  Be accountable...no magical thinking of "OH, I deserve this sugary treat...I am tired, need some junk food."  NO!  That dopamine rush you get from sugar is so temporary, you know?  And then you are hungrier than in the first place, and more tired, due to the insulin release from all the sugar!  What we really deserve is health, feeling better, and more energy!

So, my goal is to lose 5 pounds by the end of November.  Strategies are adjusting my diet, cutting stress when I can, and maintain my activity level...I truly run around like crazy already!  So it is the diet, for sure.  It is hard at the hospital, because people are always bringing candy and cookies and cake, etc, for the nurses!  I love all of that stuff, so much so that I keep it forever on my tummy and hips.  Hahaha!

I am not a huge person, but really, a stimulating thought is...if not now, when?  When I am 95 years old?  NOW is the answer!!!

I see some very, very large, very young ladies in the hospital, with medical problems associated with it.  a 46 year old lady, yesterday, 400 pounds, with diabetes, heart disease, vascular insufficiency in her legs...the nicest lady in the world, and just desperate to regain her health. Like me, she loves sugary goodies.   We became good friends, and have talked a lot about our goals!

I think it starts with each individual person...and I am talking about ME!  So...that is my goal.  Keep me accountable, would you? Want to do it too???

Just some musing from my mind this morning; self talk for me.

*********************************************************

Have a lovely day!

Julie

I have sleep apnea. I wish someone had told be sooner that one of the biggest symptoms is weight gain! who knew? Saying that I have had it for years and have quite a few pounds to peal off. I am down 25 and need to lose about 10 more. I have taken a break during COVID...not losing right now but not gaining either!!!! There is no time like the present to start making the little changes!! and all the little changes add up!! good luck you can do it!!!!

Good for you taking control of your diet--I really need to do it, too. Hard when your husband eats like a horse and doesn't gain!! Best of luck with this...

I like your scrappy quilts...nice works...

Your crumb quilts are so cute, and I love the on-point cornerstones in the last one! I too need to watch what I eat more. I thrive on sugar, especially with chocolate! Just can't resist it! I weighed this morning, and its the same as two weeks ago; no gain, no loss. I need to take control of my reaching hands more! I do fix sensible, healthy meals, but it's the cookie and candy jars I need to get rid of! Thanks for the encouragement to try. Keep reminding me! ---"Love"

Do you know anyone who wants a bag of crumbs? I’d be glad to send the ones I have to you or one of your readers.

I came here from Joy's blog, Joyful Quilter. I sure should try to lose weight, too. With me it is a lot the activity level. Too long to go into here. Plus I love chips and like sweets, but the chips are what is hardest for me to give up...

I have a crumb quilt under the needle now...and have made 3, I think. I make crumb blocks when I don't know what I want to make, or when I am stressed...or sometimes just because.

Loved the crumb blocks, even the one that turned out to be lunch (wasn't wearing my glasses). The crumb blocks with the stunning sashing, square turned on point, etc. was over-the-top wonderful. It gave class to the humble crumbs. Good job. 8-)))

I have no excuse..I've lost 60 lbs twice in my life and I know I could again but being alone, no reason to cook, I eat stuff I want. Candy, snacks, etc. I know I could and should do better but I really just don't care. So I'll most likely just continue down the path I'm on.

Since February I have simply reduced the amount of food I eat and have lost 10 pounds -- slow but sure.

Elaine's comment made me laugh! I love those on point cornerstones, they really jazz up the crumbs. What motivated me to keep the weight off was watching my Mom lose weight in her 50s (my age now.) She was so wrinkly afterwards that I swore I didn't want to stretch out my skin like that! Pretty vain, I guess :)

I like the sashing setting that has the squares on point. Gives extra interest to the quilt.

My friend has lost 66 pounds on Weight Watchers! She has an app on her phone that keeps track of the points! She said it’s the easiest thing she’s ever done! No meetings and weights in once a week! It’s only 20.00 a month. You may give it a try. I am trying to get my sister to try it but with no luck!

it is a change of lifestyle for sure...and a continuing process as well but it does get easier to avoid foods that sabotage good intentions...

Excellent blog today, Julie. For me, it’s about portion control. I eat healthy, I just eat too much.
Love your crumb quilts!

Each of the crumb quilts you shared here is a beauty. I love that you can take what many would toss away and create a thing of beauty.
Two years ago I lost over 20 pounds for my son's wedding. Then last year I gained it back stress eating over all the stuff going on with my Mom. I was just going to start to tackle that again when Covid hit and instead of losing I gained another 6 or 7 pounds. I just last week determined that I needed to get back to being serious about eating well. My meals are pretty healthy, but I need to stop baking the cakes and muffins, etc. I need to stop snacking late at night, and I will only allow myself one small piece of dark chocolate a day. I also need to exercise daily, even if it is just a 30 minute walk. I'm sure your activity at the hospital takes you well above any step-count I get.I had already set a similar goal for myself, so I will certainly join you!

Your crumb quilts are so very pretty; I love them. Best wishes on your health regimen; you are determined for the very best of reasons and that's the ticket right there-- it's not something that anyone else can do for us. We do all need to be accountable and we can't care for others if we don't care for ourselves first. I'm cheering you on! Sending bug hugs for much success~

Love your crumb quilts, so much fun there.
I used to have a sweet tooth. I started to get sore muscles and joints and someone suggested it was due to eating sugar.I laughed it off until I was walking like a 90 year old when I would get out of my car after work.
I gave up sugar and wow my aches and pains went away with it. I try to avoid it but occasionally will have something sweet. Now I can't eat more than a few bites because it tastes SOOO sweet.
Best of luck with your weight loss.

Good Luck to you on losing weight, Julie! In the last two weeks, I have lost five pounds. I thought about losing weight, well, HOW to lose weight for several months. I thought about how I eat - snacks, extended lunches, second helpings. I thought about how I rail against regimens set up by others. I talked to God about "righteous desires of the heart," because I knew losing weight had to be a joint effort. My husband was already losing weight (Invisalign trays) but he wasn't part of my effort.
So, I cut out snacks. Then I realized I often get up and get busy and don't eat breakfast until Noon. But can't skip breakfast because that is when I take my pills. Can't skip dinner because then I wouldn't get to talk to my husband. So decided to skip lunch. That worked for a week. Found myself on the couch under a quilt shaky and cold, so ate lunch. Decided I could skip lunch every other day. Days I get really hungry I can eat 200 calories for lunch or a 4pm snack. (dinner often isn't til after 7pm, when hubby comes home.)
I feel fine on this chosen method, no anger against others, freedom to eat smaller portions of lighter foods as needed. Really hoping I can lose another 25 lbs. We'll see!

Good luck on the weight loss. I've been trying for a couple of years now, and no loss. It's really hard to change what I eat when my guys (hubby and son) aren't interested in eating differently. I can't cook 2 dinners every day. I've cut back a lot over the past 2 years, and am trying to eat more healthy as much as I can.
