I have made the decision to put my Splendid Sampler blocks together with triple sashing and nine patches. I have completed several quilts this way, and love the effect.
These blocks mean a lot to me. At the time I started this batch (yes, I had a couple of false starts, including some blocks that are just plain missing!), there were multiple attacks against the US...terrorist stuff. I decided to make my quilt out of red, white and blue, standing for the United States. Additionally, and this is more personal yet...I was called in one day to help in the operating room, to help with an emergency bypass surgery, at my work. This surgery saved this man's life. I was wearing a dark blue scrub jacket, that got caught on the C-arm x-ray in the operating room and tore beyond repair. So? I cut it up, and that is the dark blue in my sashing. This quilt means a lot to me for another reason...my dear friend Lyn is making it too, and it is a connection to her, over the miles and continents.
So!!! Here is where I am so far. I may not make all of the blocks...and may substitute some other favorites...but here it is!!!
Making pie per request today...before baking!
And a cherry one as well!!
Did you notice that Bonnie Hunter announced the colors in her Mystery quilt? Please see her post here!!

I love the triple sashing, but have never used it. Maybe I should put that on my 2017 list! Very touching that you included your scrubs in the quilt.
Triple sashing is as yummy as pie! I love the way it looks with your blocks.
I love triple sashing with 9-patch cornerstones.
You have many good reasons why this is a special quilt.
Oh, those pies look good. I guess I need to have another go at gluten free crust. Can't get through holiday season without baking a few pies.
Love that sashing. I've used it before, too. I've downloaded all the blocks, but, haven't made any yet. So many other projects I've been working on this year. Good use of your scrubs.
Absolutely love the triple sashing along with the story of your colors! Also, your blog header has long been one of my favorites (the plaid and triple sashing are fantastic) and I've included something like it in my quilt "bucket binder" -- those quilts I want to someday make!
WOW love how your sampler quilt is coming along! By the way I am offering free sampling of your pies, just for today......pop on over! :-)
Sorry to hear about the garment incident but it makes a wonderful sashing. We need to be resourceful and you are a notch above everyone. You are in the middle of another fantastic quilt. Love it, Julie! Take care! ;^)
The history behind the blocks and the sashing only make the quilt more meaningful. The blocks look wonderful with the triple sashing and nine-patch cornerstones.
The triple smashing is always a successful go to! Your quilt is awesome! I have a bad history with stitching along with BOMs. Enjoy your weekend eating pie! XO
Awesome idea for you borders! The triple sashing and 9 patches really make your blocks cohesive and look wonderful. Great idea for the material from your jacket. I saved and have used a lot of my scrub material. It turns out it was made from a soft Hoffman cotton. If you need any more navy blue, I have some I can send you :-)
What a wonderful story your quilt has! Way to go turning your jacket into sashing. Great setting for your lovely blocks.
Great stories to go with your beautiful sampler. The blue triple sashing is a great choice it frames the blocks without overpowering.
Both pies look delicious. Pumpkin is a favorite to have this time of year. I watched Martha Stewart making a tart cherry pie just this morning. She always makes it look so easy with all those fancy appliances and tools.
I have always thought that the best part of quilt is the story behind it, and your quilt has a great one. I love that the blocks that bring sad memories are surrounded by a sashing that represents compassion and life saving. I hope your label conveys the story of this very special quilt.
