Plaids and Plains flying geese: decision time!

OK, OK!  That is enough flying geese to make a fair sized quilt.  So...what now??
I had these little stars already made, and just put them up there to see if I liked them.  I think that I need bigger stars, so it will all go together nicely...48 six inch stars!! If I go that route...
Some red triangles?  Nope...but I will find a place for these, someday, in some quilt!
And here is that empty space.  I am thinking of some applique, but what?  Birds? Geese?  A flowering vine??

Maybe just a plain border????  I am liking the contrast between the many plaids and the plains...that part is fun!!

Any thoughts, dear friends???  Here is my continual sticking point. THE BORDERS!!!

Have a great day, everyone!!

Those stars are just perfect Julie. Hope you have a bunch already made up to decrease your need to make a whole bunch more.

Donna, I have a lot of these four inch ones...but I think this quilt needs 6 inch stars, so it all lines up to piece together!!!

Plain borders? Then your applique "birds" can start flying in the border before they fly through the middle of the quilt to the other side!

I like the look of the stars as the border. With geese in the sky and stars I'm not sure a vine would work for me. Hmmmm?

I love this quilt. I love the stars too, any size you want. You know that Canada Geese do fly during the night. So stars are good. If you want something in the negative space, you could applique the Milky Way, lol. Or just quilt the Milky Way in the negative space. Anywho! Good luck with the decision. (I am stuck on mine too.) Enjoy! ;^)

Stars large enough to match seams would be perfect, but I also like the idea of plain with some "geese blocks joining the others. Whatever you decide will be perfect.

This is a tough one Julie! I know the struggle very well!
I vote for put them in the UFO closet and see what happens! *snort*

i'd suggest a 1 inch white border just for a demarcation - then the stars ..... and the size won't look like it doesn't match the size of the geese squares, too...

love it !!

I rarely put borders on quilts! The stars look good, I admit :). Hopefully your decisions will come quickly!

I agree with Kathleen, use those stars with a narrow border first and they would look great.

I'm REALLY liking that and really like that 'empty' space. Birds would be cool! It's lovely!

I say no borders. But maybe use a single column of those stars between those geese. Love all those scrappy colors!

Hmmm, I think the stars are pretty, but agree that a solid border between the geese and stars is a good idea. I would leave the break in the geese blank. Canada Geese fly above our home all the time. On quiet days when I am working outside I can hear their wings flap. The formations are not always perfect--there are often breaks here and there.

Your flying geese are wonderful. Have you considered simply continuing more "negative space" as your border? You have that wonderful plain streak which feels like open sky. By adding more plain background fabric for an outer border your geese might really feel like they are flying in the sky. An option would be to sneak in a few rebel geese into your "plain border". A final binding of "geese fabric" could keep those geese framed in. However you choose to complete your quilt I know it will be beautiful whether it has borders or not. Enjoy the process of choosing.

My thoughts were a plain border so the flying geese stand out Julie?

What about a turkey red plain border? I say red because it seems to me that the geese often sport red in them and I think the the eye needs a place to rest in your quilt.

Not all quilts need borders!

I am thinking plain white border with applique in 2 corners. It's a beauty!

The negative space is wonderful! Maybe no border, so there's nothing to distract from your pretty blocks?

How do you make these blocks? I just love them all together and what a great idea to combine your plaids/stripes and plain fabrics. Do I have a lot of them!

Why mess with perfection? If borders are necessary then just plain background fabric.

I'm a border fan - I think most quilts without some kind of border look naked...
I like the idea of a plain narrow border first, then maybe the 6" stars. Or maybe a plaid and plain piano key border?
