Now what to do about borders??

OK! This top will look like this when it is completed...wow, that yellow sure sticks out there like a sore thumb!! I may replace it...then again, maybe not. Now, help...what should I do about borders? A plain border? Or a pieced one, and if so, what pattern? What to do??

I am working on the second string quilt, big stitch quilting, and loving it! I wish I could do this all day long...unfortunately, I work and clean house and generally live life, so cannot big stitch all day long, LOL!! I clip all my threads at the end, so you will always see a mess of threads on my quilts, until the very end.

Here is the whole quilt...I have the binding on, and need to hand stitch it down, and am working on the border quilting...yummy!!

I hope you all have a great day!

Julie

I just love the flower basket quilt! I think a plain border in pink or white would be so pretty with some flowers appliqued.
The string quilt came out so gorgeous too! You do such fabulous work!

Oh, Julie, two more scrappy delights that make me drool!
I wouldn't take out the yellow baskets--they sing!
I think I would do a border of one fabric--something muted to give the eye a rest, and then a final border that echos the sashing and cornerstones. But that is just my thoughts and I know you will come up with something much better. : )

Love the big stitch quilting...what needle and thread do you find the best??
Re: basket quilt...what about a solid border with basket blocks in the corners?

Your string quilt of diamond shaped blocks is so different, and very nice. The flower baskets are adorable! I think that I would go either no border, or a light color, like the background.

I love all that you are showing us today. I don't think your yellow jumps out too much, but if you think so, then I'd do the opposite of what someone said in a prior comment....I'd put some of that yellow into the border somehow...and then maybe the yellow would be spread out more and your eyes wouldn't be so drawn to the yellow in the quilt itself. That being said, since I don't think the yellow is too bright, I'd go with a rather tame border....not pieced as the piecing might take away from the nice look of the blocks in the quilt.

I'm rather clueless when it comes to pieced borders but I love the baskets :-) and the string quilt and it's borders are delightful!

I think you have enuf going on with the baskets and sashing. I would vote for a plain border or keeping with your sashing theme, four different fabrics for top, sides and bottom or 2 fabrics, one for the sides and a different one for the top and bottom.

love, love, love the string blocks and the border is fab!

Julie,
I think your quilt looks great without any additional borders.

You could do a yellow border to match up with the yellow blocks! I like the yellow, I would leave them in!

Save the yellow baskets! Save the yellow baskets!

Julie, I LOVE the yellow in the basket quilt! Yellow is just a happy color and screams Spring! I also really like the string quilt. I dipping my toes into strings by doing some string setting triangles.

Loving the basket quilt, what about a plain border, with prairie points on top made from your scraps?
I can see why you would want to do that lovely hand quilting all day......shame we have to do other stuff!

My border idea will use your scraps! I am assuming that your sashing is 2.5 inches - cut the scraps into 2.5 inch squares - set them on point with more of that cream - et voila - a border!

Would love to see some piano keys round those baskets or just wider of the same as the sashing! Both quilts make me want to get started on yet more quilts - how can you do that to me Julie!?

Oh Julie I absolutely love those two coloured sashings for the basket quilt - so effective - lovely!

I would go with a plain border (same as background fabric) and then do a scrappy binding using some of the same fabrics as the baskets.

Great quilts!

You've so much piecing going on within the quilt, I'd go for a quieter border. Love the colours you've got going on ... even the yellow :)

The string quilt looks wonderful, I love all that big stitching, gives a wonderful look to this piece!! Re: the basket quilt, firstly: I really don't mind the yellow, there is not that much of it and it doesn't detract too much, second: I looked at this and looked at this and don't really know what to suggest for the border! There is a lot going on in the quilt, so I'm sort of leaning towards a fairly plainish border! Sorry to not be much help with this!!

Love both quilts!!
I just saw in another blog that a quilter was not happy with one particular green fabric in her quilt and was going to remake the quilt because of the one fabric. It was suggested that she try the product from primitive gatherings called instant antique. It made a subtle enough difference that she ended up being really happy with the quilt. That might just tone down the yellow fabric enough that you will be happy with it. Just a thought, I have not tried the product myself, but it might be worth a try for your situation. Good luck

I am not a yellow lover but truly I like it in the basket quilt. Could be you just take good pictures, but I bet it is just your talent for picking the right fabric.

Puffins and purples!!

I was tempted by Puffins...a squirrelly breed!!  LOL!  This fabric was shared with me, and I have been loved these bright, candy corn colors...
