May I ask your opinion?

Hi all! I have been playing around in the nine patch blocks we exchanged...and I just love the Honeybee block. I think this block will showcase the nine patches. I think I made the applique too overwhelming in this version...please tell what you think? I have made templates for smaller applique pieces... I have the rest of the blocks cut for 12 of the nine patches, making them finish at 12 inches.

********************Nurse's notes*****************

I recently had a tough day at my nursing work. I had a family that insisted on writing down every move I made, and every thing I said was recorded on this ladies I-phone. It got really old, really fast...they were just very hard to deal with, to say the least. They all were so rude to me! There is just so much I can take...why be mean to me when you don't even know me?? The patient, however...was a real doll!! I really think that 99% of people really try their best at all times...please, give me a chance, dear lady!! (Sorry dear blog diary...I just had to get this out, it has been just eating at me all day!)

***************************************************

Have a great day!

Julie

How can people be so rude sometimes?! Ugh!

I like the applique and can't say that it is too big, because I haven't seen one that is smaller. I'm a visual person so I have to make a comparison.

Julie,
I love your idea of adding applique-it looks lovely! I have great respect for nurses, I am sorry that you were treated so rudely!

My DD is a nurse. Sometimes people are just not nice. If you want to make the applique a bit smaller, how about sizing down the one in the middle? I think that would even things out a bit. Without seeing more blocks together, it's hard for me to visualize. I think it's a cute idea and will look great!

I love the Honey Bee block. Great for your nine patches.

People are plain rude sometimes and inconsiderate. I'm sure it wasn't you. They're probably like that in everything they do. Try not to let it bother you!

I don't know that the applique is overwhelming...it's hard to tell without a full quilt...I think it looks nice.

Sorry about the rudeness...I guess that's what happens with people. =(

grrrrr! There is a time and place and that sure isn't the one! I hate that everyone have a camera/video in every corner of the world.

I love the honey bee block, but I think the center petal is too big, I've made them all the same size when I did this block. Great idea for the 9 patch. I'm doing Sisters Choice from bonnie hunters' quiltville site with my civil war 9 patchs that I swapped out. I was doing a few already, thats why I bowed out of your swap :-(

I love the modified 9-patch blocks!

Sorry about your rude people...but you never know there could be a very good reason they were documenting...though could have done it in a better way. Don't let this bother you...if you did everything as dictated by protocol you should be fine with no worries don't ya think?. :-) Big hugs for the rotten day.
As for your nine patch...it is hard to say if it is too big without seeing a sampling of four blocks coming together.

I love the block just as it is, so if it were me-----it's done!

Sorry you have to dear with rude people--no call for it.

Love the honey bee block. I think the applique size looks fine.
As to families...my first thought would have been to carry an Iphone and record everything they said to me as well :-0 It is really a wonder that people want to irritate and wear out the one taking care of their loved one. Sorry you had to go through that. It sure makes for a long day.

Were these rude people trying to build a case for a malpractice suit against the hospital/doctor/nurses?

In my opinion the "bees" are too large...by the time the blocks were put together I think they would be butting into each other...just my thinking....but let us know what you decide.

I'm sorry that lady had so little respect for you and I can't blame you for feeling upset by her actions and the way she was treating you. As for the applique, I'd want to see a few blocks together and also see some with smaller applique before I could decide. But one of the other comments did get me to thinking that the applique may be too dominant once the blocks are all put together if it stays this large. (But...maybe you want the applique to be dominant?) Bottom line is, whatever YOU like is what you should do.

Oh i like what you did with the nine patch block.
I really like the quilt in your header photo was that from a pattern or something you made up?

I love honeybee blocks! I think I'd make the center one smaller, but not sure. As others have said, it depends on what they look like together. Sorry you had to deal with a rude family; that can certainly zap the peace from your day! Have a good evening!

Honeybee is one of my favorite blocks. They look great. The day I left the hospital from having knee replacement,I thanked my nurse and she said it is easy to be kind to someone who is nice. I would never have thought to act any other way. People can be so rude. Pray for them, they need your kind thoughts.

Great idea for your nine-patches, this will be a wonderful quilt. Can't wait to see it all sewn together! Hope your workdays go better, it's hard being in healthcare. People are rude, scared, feel terrible, and take it out on you! Hang in there!

I love the honey bee block. I think it'll look just fine when its surrounded by other intriguing shapes and colors. So sorry about your work day. Some folks just aren't happy unless they are unhappy. To bad they have to spread it around!

What a nice idea for using your nine patches! I like the prominence of the applique personally, though there wouldn't be any thing wrong with smaller petals. I did a quick Google images search and yours seemed pretty consistent with the general proportions of the patterns. There were some cute ones with a large petal in the middle and smaller ones on the edges. Sorry about the rough day at work.
Sometimes people forget that they are interacting with actual human beings who have feelings and opinions.

I do not like the appliqué - never have. :^)

I really like your block a lot. I don't know about the size one way or the other. So sorry about the hard day and the mean people you had to deal with. They should appreciate all the good you are doing. I've been in the hospital many times and know how hard nurses work. I admire you.

Re: applique...it does look a touch big, or maybe it's that the fabric is so dark that it stands out? But I love the idea of making them into honeybee blocks!

Re: hypervigilant and rude family...maybe that's just how they handle their anxiety?!? I've seen people do very wierd things when they are beside themselves with worry! Maybe once their loved one is out of danger, they'll be nicer?

I love the applique on the block, would love to make a quilt, just with that block. Family can be worse than the patients, but that seems extreme.

Sorry about the nasty people at work; nurses work so hard and deserve so much better. I am thankful for the care they give!

Love your applique. I am concerned they will be too close to the seam once you put the blocks together and lose the 1/4" all the way around. In turn, when the bees look too close to the edge, it will make it appear as though they are crowded on the block and in that case, the perception is they are too big. Because the proportion is lovely as is (without sewing the blocks together) I would suggest decreasing the size of each bee section by 1/4"; this will retain the current scale (which looks great) once the blocks are sewn into a quilt top. I look forward to seeing it finished!

I really don't understand why some people insist on being rude - it really baffles me. Sigh!

I like the block but like Lori I'm a very visual person so I need a small one in order to make a comparison. :-) Do what makes YOU happy.

Hi Julie..thanks for your comments on my blog.
I just drew out 4 blocks to see what the pattern would look like....and I think adding that applique would be awesome and in that size would work okay...in my opinion. A great way to use the 9 patches!!
So glad your patient was so nice but her family sure had trust issues!! Some people have so much anxiety in situations and react in odd ways!! The thing about us nurses is...we put on a smile and try not to let it bother us!!

I've had people record me when I was doing intake histories for an orthopedic surgeon. It never bothered me but they were already in our office because they had filed a legal claim against their employer (workers' comp); that's what their recording you sounds like to me--looking for a reason to sue! People think ANYTHING can be made into a legal claim but they are wrong. Hope you soon forget about these difficult folks.

I like the honeybee blocks but I do think maybe the applique is a bit big. I noticed the applique first before I saw the 9 patches. Your call!

Those people really invaded your spacial privacy. To me - their actions were confrontational and extremely disruptive. I'm sorry you had to deal with such rudeness - there's no excuse for that!

I love your decision on the Honey bee applique'.
I agree with others that said to lay out a few before deciding if the pieces are too big. (to me they look fine)
If you DO change them - I'd only adjust the center applique' to match the other 2 in size.

Patty Nordahl said...

I think the applique looks fine. But as many said put 4 blocks together and that should give you a final decision as to size.

There is never an excuse for rudeness. Maybe the reason for making notes/recording conversations was to have the info to relate to family that couldn,t be there. WHen I go to the Dr I take Hubby with me and then on the way home we play did you hear what I heard? It sometimes helps me to understand.
Whatever the reason they could have been polite.

Hello Julie, I too like the applique on the block....Julie, I am sorry you had to go through that charade.....honestly I wonder what makes people tick sometimes...chin up.made me cross when I read your post..Hugs Lyn

Your banner quilt photo is the perfect solution to my contrary "I don't have light fabric" for RRCB mystery. Was thinking of doing complete opposite color scheme and if it doesn't work out, now I have your quilt idea to come back to!

My only thought was also that the applique might be too close to the next seam and lose some of it's punch. Or not!
But I love the design idea for the block.

It DOES feel good to get things out sometimes, doesn't it! I'm so sorry that you had to go through this. I cannot imagine. But the only thing that I can find in defense of them is that they must have really been burned by someone at some point perhaps? It's sad though, that they couldn't have seen and enjoyed and been thankful for the care that their loved one was obviously receiving from you.

BIG HUGS to you, Jules!

Wow...what a great block. Now you have me inspired to do something wonderful with my 9 patches. I am no expert, but I think the middle petal needs to be a little smaller...but other wise they are perfect!!!

People never cease to amaze me with their rudeness now days. Even after working in the medical field for 38 years...I can't believe how they treat the Doctors like they are gods and the ancillary staff the does most of the work are treated poorly. Hang in there...you are doing what you love and that's all that matters!

paulette said...

Poor YOU!! I tell you some people are so mean! They should be treating you with kindness and respect - after all it you who will be caring for their loved one. They just don't get it! They probably treat EVERYONE this way so keep smiling and be thankful the guy in the bed is a sweety..the poor man has to live with these people!
Take care...Oh and I love the appliqued nine patches! :o)

Well I cannot say I am surprised by the actions of the family, some of them are plain idiots. I nursed in Critical Care, ER and PACU for nearly 45 years, make sure that you have good documentation of everything and if you didn't make notes , for your eyes only, after the shift do it ASAP when the memories are still clear. Who knows what this crowd has in mind and it a very litigious society.
Additionally I don't know where you practise nursing but your association or union should offer you some guidance, they are invading your privacy as well as the clients.

Gad, I hate families like that. Had one several months ago who objected to my putting the pills in her mother's mouth. Her mother couldn't do it herself, but the daughter felt it was "unsanitary".

I SHOULD have handed HER the pills and told her to give them to her mother herself. She also didn't like where the ICU nurse put the IV--despite the fact her mother was a hard stick. And yes, this little patient was a doll herself, but she had the family from hell.

To make it worse, they were of another race and had HUGE chips on their shoulders. I don't care if my patient is orange or chartreuse--my job is to take care of her to the best of my ability and that's what I do. I am a professional.

People can be pretty stupid sometimes, and no one knows this better than those in a service industry.

Julie - Honeybee is one of my very favourite blocks and you're right the applique is striking but not totally overpowering - depends on whether you want the 9patch to be the eyecatcher or the bees - I love it but I just know it would look equally good with less striking bees - as for the family recording your every move/word they sound like a set of litigation hunters before they might possibly even have anything to worry about - what a sad state of affairs

Puffins and purples!!

I was tempted by Puffins...a squirrelly breed!!  LOL!  This fabric was shared with me, and I have been loved these bright, candy corn colors...
