A treasure!!! Now...the batting is actually an old army blanket. Would you leave that in there? What would you do? Only a few seams need repair....would you quilt it or leave the ties?

What a treasure! I would fix the seams and then leave the rest as it was made.
That is such a wonderful treasure. I would keep it as original as possible, giving your nephew some instructions on how best to clean it. It's beautiful as is.

There is a lot of work in this quilt. Would your nephew appreciate something quilted or would he think the ties were fine? I agree with Binsa above.
I would fix the seams, leave the ties, then add quilting along the sides of the white "melon" pieces to give it a bit more stability when it is used.
I agree with ebwhite - fix it and add a little quilting to stabilize.

Oh, that is a treasure, Julie. So precious. My inclination would be to keep it as original as possible, but I guess it would help to know what your sister wants--or her son.
That is a priceless and incredible treasure! Fix seams as necessary, leave the ties, and maybe, just maybe quilt around the melons for more stability for the years to come. Your nephew will treasure it no doubt, especially with his granny's embroidered signature! ---"Love"
One more thing --- be sure that beautiful and intricate curved binding is secure for years to come! ---"Love"

Truly a treasure! I’d leave the blanket. I tried that block back in the day and made four beautiful placemats. Often thought I’d revisit it. So delightful to see it again, especially as a wonderful memory!

Oh how sweet! Love that you get to be part of refurbishing this one. Not sure if I would leave the army blanket in the quilt or not. Do you think that the very flat surface and weight of it is rubbing holes in the quilt where it is tied?
That's a hard question! What a family treasure! I would want to make it last as long as possible.
It is a true testament to how your Mom made things back then ... army blanket filling and ties to hold it together!

This is a treasure. I made this design and those arcs are tricky to piece. If this quilt will only be displayed, I would leave the army blanket as batting and leave the yarn ties. If it will be used, I would remove the army blanket, possibly leave the orange ties, and hand quilt it. It will wear much longer and you would be part of the history by hand quilting your moms quilt.
