Log cabin quilting!!

I have all eighty blocks of this log cabin quilt together.  Here are a few of them laid out.  I enjoyed making the blocks, and loved using some of my scraps, BUT!!  next time?  I will make sure that there is even MORE contrast between the blues and the neutrals...and the CENTERS will be RED!!  It went fast, and was fun, and I liked the process...just thinking of ways to improve it for next time.
Two more blocks for the Splendid sampler...of course, I made them my own!!

Nurse's notes:

As I am getting older, I am missing my friends from days of old.  After you have been in a particular place of employment for a lot of years...people start retiring and just moving on.  I miss them!!!  Even though I love the new nurses, they move on very quickly, and there is just something about working with a person for twenty plus years, knowing that we can count on each other through thick and thin.  I miss those people!  We had a lovely quilting group at the hospital, and made countless charity quilts for American Heart.  Now?  I am the only one left!  Everyone else retired!!!

I had a stable heart to recover today...it is good, and I waited for hours for them to arrive from surgery.  That was wonderful...and very satisfying to this old nursie!!

Have a great day, everyone!!

Julie

Not sure what you mean by wanting more contrast between the blues and the neutrals. I think your contrast is very good in this quilt. I love it and the yellow centres too. I am happy to hear there will be a "next one". (Chuckles)
I understand how you feel about people retiring and being left behind. We spend so many hours at work with the same people, it's normal to develop a strong relationship. Goodbyes are always sad. So I'll say until next time! Enjoy the logs. ;^)

What a great day you had if you had a patient have a happy result!! And I love your latest blue/white log cabin.
Step away. You'll love it, too... you're too close!

Always look forward to your posts! Beautiful quilt and your thoughts on people being removed from our everyday life. Being Veterans Day I posted a picture of my late husband and shed a few tears. So many of my family and friends are gone, but I try to just enjoy the memories. Life does indeed move on.
Maybe there can be a quilting class with you as the instructor in the future!

Beautiful Log Cabin blocks! I think you have enough contrast, but red centers would make it "pop" a bit more.

I worked with a group of teachers for 25 years - we had "ownership" in the school and the kids. New teachers came and went, but didn't understand the closeness the core group had. Hopefully, they will find that in their careers, too.

You put this together very fast (according to my pace with large quilts)! Could the blues have any more contrast with the neutrals than this? It is beautiful, Julie. Take Randy's advice. : )
If you make another one, red would make pretty centers.
I salute you for making the blocks your own. Always fun to put your own twist on something (whether you do it on purpose, or accidentally, as I sometimes do).
I understand you observation as the "old guard" moves on. Kind of a lonesome feeling, isn't it? People today don't seem to sink down the roots that we did. They are always moving on to new and different places. I see it in my own children, and DH has worked at the same place for over 35 years!

Red centers would be good. How are our scraps holding up?

The quilt is gorgeous the way it is. Another with red would be just as gorgeous. Are the light strips half the size of the dark ones? May have to tackle one f these. The first quilt I ever made was a log cabin for my niece's graduation. That will forty years ago next June. I think it might be time for another. Appliqué took over my quilting but who says you can't appliqué a log cabin. Sort of make it my own.

Just returned from a Veteran Day service. fRemember them today and everyday.

I,too, am alone now in quilting--I left my quilt shop and my quilting friend in NY when I moved to Fl 14 months ago to be near by grown children--it is a good thing I have a blog site and blog sites I read--as they are the ones that keep me moving--
I did have a sad thought today--neither of my kids (both in their 40's) have spouses or any children of their own--I wondered today--Who will care for them when they old????
love and laughter, di

That is what happened to my quilt bee. One by one everyone moved to be closer to family. Guess this happens to most when we get older. Sure miss my quilting buddies.

Great contrast in the logs! The visual effect of being curved is super. It's going to be a beautiful quilt. It seems many of us can relate to the changing times.

The log cabin looks great! Red centers for your next one would look wonderful as well. People don't stay put as much anymore....changing times for sure.

The log cabin looks fantastic, kudos to you. I'm sorry that the shifting sands syndrome is affecting you there; hang in there. Remember the Girl Scout's song: Make new friends but keep the old, One is silver and the other's gold!

Awww! Hugs to you Julie! I very much appreciated the Nurses I was blessed with during my hospital stays (2 last year)... and it's evident that being a Nurse is more of a "way of life" than a "job"... maybe a few quilty nurses will pass through your way... and stay for awhile... :-) Beautiful log cabin quilt!

Love that log cabin! Will you be retiring soon?

Your quilt is lovely. I like the yellow centers.
I, too, have worked in health care a long time. Many of my long time co-workers have retired or moved on. It reminds me of the round from long ago in Girl Scouts, "Make new friends, but keep the old, one is silver and the other gold."
Thank you for your blog and caring for your patients.

A lovely blue log cabin... very peaceful!
I understand about the comfort of working with long time colleagues.
It's a grief process when the team members change and you're the only original one left standing.
Big hugs!

Puffins and purples!!

I was tempted by Puffins...a squirrelly breed!!  LOL!  This fabric was shared with me, and I have been loved these bright, candy corn colors...
