Stringing along here

So,  a few more of these blocks happened.  I am having such a great time working with strings!!  This is of course not the final arrangement, and I am making more blocks...and loving it!
I put another round of lights on my log cabin blocks...81 in all.  Why 81?  Because I miscounted, LOL!!  I am thinking of a setting where I can do some applique in the light areas...hmmmm...stay tuned for that!
And I finished all the flying geese sashings, for some quilt in the future, I guess!  I loved this piecing, it was just great fun too.

**********************Nurse's notes***********************

Well, I floated again. Twice last week.  That means going to another nurse's station, where you don't normally work.  The last time, it was tough.  The nurses there were not supportive of the floaters, which was me and also two other girls, they did not even talk to us.  I did not even get report on two of my patients.  So it was lonely and tough to boot.  Sick people, and lots of them.  I did the best I could, not knowing where anything was and not knowing any of the patients.  I think I may refuse to go there again.  Wonder if I could get away with that??  Probably not...but I may give it a go anyway if the muse descends...

On a lighter note, I met a patient's husband in the grocery store that I had had in the hospital about five years ago.   She was so very, very sick, and really was lucky to make it out of the hospital.   He is quite elderly, and still takes loving care of his wife each day.  He was buying her a treat, ice cream, on this hot day.  I love the kind of love that lasts 60+ years!!!

Have a great day, all!!

Julie

Ooooh Julie,I don't know how you dream these things up but girly I do think that this may be my most favorite YET!!! :D I am so sorry about work---that really makes a hard job even tougher. Sending hugs---and I really do love those strings and baskets. :)

I floated for the first 6 years I worked as an RN after I completed orientation. It. can. be. the. pits.

Love the string basket blocks. You are piecing up a storm!

I never think to make quilt units ahead of time - like your flying geese. I really need to do that.

This past weekend I experienced some wonderful nurses first-hand. They were wonderful and kind and made me think of you. God Bless nurses, everywhere!

Love your quilt progress. I am such a sucker for baskets. You're gonna be a bad influence on me starting a new project, I just know it!

I've never made a string quilt, but those basket blocks have got me thinking. I might have to try it one of these days, god knows I've got enough "strings" hanging around my scrap basket!

Ugh about floating and the mean nurses. What's up with that, anyway? Just when I was thinking ALL you nurses are angels. Nice reward, seeing that man, tho.

All your blocks & quilts are yummy!

I have some string rectangles that I am thinking of squaring up and using them to surround a block like you did. I have to do some thinking first.

Great baskets, but I really love your log cabin blocks, and look forward to seeing more - applique sounds like a great idea! It amazes me the way that you were treated at work. I would think they would be thrilled to have help. And can't we get out of high school and just be nice!?

Strings are not something I think of making but I like where you're taking them! I long to sit and piece but have little time these days. Labor Day for sure:)

Unfriendly coworkers are ridiculous! It's not like it was your choice to go there. Is there anyone who should know about their bad attitude ?

A research piece I will have my students studying in our health care ethics class tonight.
"The most commonly rationed of these (activities) were comforting and talking to patients, reported by 66% of
participating nurses"

Love the baskets and pieces for future quilt.
Heard something funny on tv last week from a character playing a nurse .. "Floating, not as relaxing as it sounds" Cracked me up :-) Having worked ICU most of my career, I learned that it was also the 'float pool'!

Okay I'm gonna tell you what I did when floating and I was treated this way. Working in ICU/CCU is very different from being on the floor so I went to the D.O.N. and had a heart to heart with her about floating nurses and what her expectations were. Then I told her how dangerous it was to have nurses on the floor that had no support from the floor staff, their routines or even where supplies are kept. And I reminder her that if she wanted to save money by floating us we need to work as a team and be welcomed by the floor staff.
She claimed she had no idea this was going on. Things did get better after that, she taught the floor nurses that if they didn't have the extra help they would have to work twice as hard! Give it a try :0) what do you have to loose?
Love the baskets and the string settings.....how perfect!

I'm off my soapbox now....
Happy Sewing

Our DON's philosophy was "a nurse is a nurse is a nurse", and we were expected to float all over the hospital. One night I was sent to OB, an area I had not worked since nursing school over 40 years ago! That was the week I bought liability insurance for the first time ever.

Wonder what he would have thought if he'd come into the ER with chest pain and EKG changes and the only doc available was a urologist? After all, a doctor is a doctor is a doctor, right?

As usual, I'm loving your quilt projects.
I hope my honey buys me ice cream when we are old.... :)

Hi Julie! I just read your nurse story....
Burn, burn, burning here...
How can we treat our coworkers much less women and fellow humans this way! Agree, talk with DON. If tried before, I would call your union rep on the spot, unsafe pt care, they will call in supervisor! Bet that behaviour will group and down the ladder ASAP!
Take care, Leslie

Puffins and purples!!

I was tempted by Puffins...a squirrelly breed!!  LOL!  This fabric was shared with me, and I have been loved these bright, candy corn colors...
