Good morning all! In between the madness of getting ready for the holidays, I decided I just must rebel and have a little break and blog a little bit!! I recently saw on one of your fabulous blogs, the above quilt. I did mine long ago, (well, maybe three years) in all turquise/blues, and got the pattern from the Quilter's Newletter Online cache of patterns. It was quilted by a friend here in town who just got her longarm quilter and wanted to practice on this with a panto. I said sure, go for it!!! I have had it in the quilt cupboard, but today I am going to wash it, and dry it, and enjoy the crinkly goodness of it!
Above is my quilt, the only one I have left from my Grandmother. Now that lady was a quilter!!! Of course you recognize the double wedding ring pattern, all from 1930's original fabrics. It is so tattered and just loved and used up! All quilted by hand in the most tiny of stitches, dense and yummy. Unfortunately, most of her quilts were destroyed, so this one is extra special!
Millie at http://www.needleandthread.us/ quilted this fabulous whole cloth quilt above. A constant request from my husband is to make great, big quilts!! Enough to cover him all up. I saw that Millie had quilted one like this for her mother, and impulsively asked her if she could make one for us. She said yes! This one is a wholecloth quilt, machine quilted, and just huge! Very pretty, and I will use it on the bed and put my smaller quilts on top seasonally for color. Good idea? I hope so!!! And I can proudly say I did all the piecing....not! I like your idea of the neutral quilt on the bed and then smaller, seasonal ones for color...folded at the foot of the bed. I'm thinking of getting a neutral bedspread...the old-fashioned chenille kind...and doing just that. :)

I like the blue quilt - so glad it is out of the cupboard!! I have an old wedding ring quilt as well, made by my great-grandmother. It's a little tattered as well. I don't use it but would sure love to... I have hopes of making my own one day...

The quilt you have from your grandma is also extra special because, well, you're special enough to share it with us!

Hi Julie, I do love your grandma's quilt, beautiful and special.With my bed I have an old marcella quilt that I put over the blankets and then add my quilts on top.Sadly, because it was so old it has small holes in it and I can no longer use it.Now I use a commercial doona cover in white and easily washable instead of having it specially laundered.Hugs Lyn
The first quilt you show intriques me as to how it was pieced. Can you show what one block looks like? It really is a nice quilt.
You are so fortunate to have your grandmothers quilt. I have one that my husband's grandmother made and one block that my grandmother made. I also have a double wedding ring that my mom made, hand pieced and hand quilted. I need to rebind it as the binding is a little tattered, but other than that, its good as new.
I love your wholecloth idea. A great way to dress up the bed seasonally without having to make a zillion bed sized quilts *s*

I love your Grandma's Double Wedding Ring quilt. Oh you lucky girl. You know I just visited with a friend a week ago and she had a quilt very similar from her Grandma and I was so impressed with it I said I just have to make one similar. I love it. Hugs Khris from Oz but currently in the USA

Your Grandmother's quilt is so precious! I could stare at those old quilts for hours at a time! I always wonder where they got the fabrics, what was going on in their life at that time and things like that! It is beautiful!

I think having someone else do a whole cloth quilt is awesome. I've had absolutely NO desire to quilt a plain piece of cloth. They are so beautiful, but I'm color addicted.

I have a pieced double ring quilt top that my mother made in the 1930s that is similar to your grandmother's. It took me months to figure out the the rectangle form used back them was the original design of the double wedding ring block. Today we use the square form.
Love your two color quilt. What a beautiful job you did on it. And how wonderful to have that quilt that was your grandmothers.
I too have a king size wholecloth quilt on my bed. I love to be able to coordinate ANY color scheme with pillows or smaller quilts in the room. I've also got a computerized longarm to do wholecloth quilts and was keeping touch with Millie regularly. She always let me know what patterns she used on her computer longarm and now she removed her blog....I was gone on emergency to CA for awhile and now am afraid I haven't a clue what happened to her.

Pretty quilts! I am puzzling about the name of the pattern for the first one. Of course that will drive me batts till I find out so I guess I'm off to Blockbase to solve that mystery.
I have in the past helped a local church group hand quilt some white on white quilts. They used them to augment the church building funds. No seams to worry about and the pattern IS the quilt. I have also seen small ones done with another different color on the back so it is reversible---very effective!

Beautiful quilts, especially the one made by your grandmother. What a treasure! I think the whole cloth quilt is wonderful, too. It'll be fun to put different quilts on top of it to change the look.
