I was just pondering about what kind of border I should use for the Red Cross quilt. I have a metric ton of these red triangles already made, and was wondering if I could use them....this way?
Or this way?
Plain red border??? (scrap pulled from the scrap basket for demonstration...)
Mustard? (ooooo yuck!!)
Ticking?? (wish it were darker...hmmm)
Or Blue? or another idea...maybe dark grey??
Please oh please, if you have a moment...what would you do??? I am sure you quilters have a wonderful idea...please share???
And on a fun note!! I recently received some 1 and 1/8 tiny fabric squares. (Thank you so much, Linda O!) I am making a series of mug rugs with them, and this is my first one. Hand quilting these...fun!!
Everyone, have a great day!!!

I like the 2nd choice best. Have fun with it.
I hesitate to tell you, but I would pick a narrow--maybe 2 1/2 inches finished border with the mustard!!
I love how the quilt is coming along!
I like the red print. The triangles make tiny roof one way and the other version would drive me crazy because they don't line up. I guess I am a bit weird about that. But it will come to you.

Whatever you decide, the quilt will be wonderful. Personally, I like the ticking. Looks more "Clara Barton" to me.
Makes sense that a nurse would make a Barton quilt.
I also like the ticking border. It's what matresses and pillows would have been made from in Clara Barton's time. Would it help to add a narrow inner border in the shade of blue you wish the ticking were and use that same blue for the binding? I know what ever you do will set the blocks off beautifully.

I like how the first one looks but was thinking, with the red and the last grayish material instead of white.
That is a beautiful quilt, love the design and fabrics.

I like the second one best, but then I love anything red!

Hi Julie I like the second border also a darker ticking would look great hugs lyn
Beautiful quilt, Julie. I like the red border best, but maybe you could do a narrow red, then a narrow dark grey border next to that, and then a wider red border. But I'm not sure I would listen to me.... You've seen my quilts and how I struggle with borders. You'll know what to do!

I love this quilt. I would do a 1" finished red border, then a 4-6" wide dark blue ticking outer border and bind it in red. All the ideas have been good ones.
The solid red looks best to me. It's such a warm and cozy looking quilt. I say keep it simple and primitive.
I'm torn between the sawtooth type border and the red border. Sorry...not much help, but I don't think you can really go wrong!! :)
Are the red HSTs on a larger scale than the rest of the quilt? I think the blue ticking is a little light . . . though mind you I've just glanced at the pictures. I know things look different in person.
Okay, you have some fun options here, but this is what came to mind as I looked at them--I think if you get too fancy on the border with the red triangles it will pull the eye away from those cute crosses in the middle, and yet I think using the red in the border unifies the quilt. How is that for contradiction? : )
I would audition a red border the same narrow width as the lines in the crosses and then see if I had enough of one of the grey-ish/blue-ish prints to do a wider border, or even do it with chunks of a variety of the fabrics of a similar tone. Don't know if it will look right in actual fact, but that is what plays in my mind.
It's looking good! I'll email a picture of what I'm doing on the border. I got the top finished this weekend :-)
Love, love the red cross quilt. I would use the red border, but it is not my quilt. You always do such beautiful work so you know best! The blue ticking is right for this retro quilt but I agree needs to be darker.
I like your 1st example Julie. Your quilt is a real eye-catcher!

Well, you've gotten lots of options suggested. For me the border definitely needs red and I like layout #1, but not with white triangles. The blue ticking is a good idea too but maybe if you tea dyed it to be a bit darker. Just throwing another idea into the mix. :0)
I like the red half square triangle border, good luck deciding!
Oh Julie that little mug rug is so CUTE! Adorable! Enjoy the tiny little pieces.
For Mrs. Clara Barton I think she would like the second picture. Maybe you could add a red cross at the midpoint of the border and make the HST facing the other way after the midpoint. Like HST facing right, a red cross, HST facing left. Am I making sense? A red cross in each corner would be nice too. Anyway, just adding my two pence. I'm sure you will find a great idea over the night. Take care. ♥ ;^)
lovely quilt! The second option with half square triangles is the one that CAUGHT my eye. ;)
Dear Julie,
I like the second picture with triangles the most. Have you decided yet?
Greetings,
Sylvia
I think a narrow red border or flange followed by the ticking would be striking. Can't wait to see what you decide to do. Plz don't keep us in the lurch for too long! :)
Wow, the red white HST I love! It pops those little crosses. It will be fun to see what you choose.
Lovely quilts! Love them all!
Maybe try a small red border with the ticking, which could be overdyed to darken it up a little bit? So many options, will look forward to what you decide on!
I like the second choice best, but am sure it will be great whatever you do.
Ask an opinion from quilters and you will get lots of different ideas!
Lots of good ideas here. I like PJ's idea and also Cindy in NC--somehow that ticking (or something like it) calls to me. Would like to see more of it laid along the quilt edge with red at the edge for binding. I like the red triangles (picture 2) too but wouldn't want to detract from the red crosses. You have a special talent for settings, so I know your design will be great!
Julie, How is Miss Rosie today? ( March 3rd) I hope doing ok!
I like the first one the best :)
Plain red border. Lovely quilt.
I like the ticking the best. Maybe with a narrow red border before it and then red on the binding. LOVE your quilts always.
I see I'm a week late at commenting so I'm sure you have plenty of suggestions. I love the red plain border. :)
I'm very fond of the first photo.
I know you don't like the mustard yellow boarder. But I think your quilt would look good with a civil war gold boarder and a civil war deep red binding.
Love the mustard and the ticking, don't like the plain red at all. I also like the red HSTs but if you have so many maybe they could be a quilt on their own? I have an antique red and white 1" HST quilt, Birds in Flight? And it s beautiful in its very simple way.

I love the ticking. Maybe a small 1/2 to 3/4 inch inner border in red and then an outer border of the grey ticking. It's a charming quilt
